Minecraft Legends is quickly shaping up to be one of the most exciting releases of 2023. Taking the iconic blocky aesthetics of Minecraft and its building mechanics and infusing them with action-strategy gameplay, Minecraft Legends looks like a surprisingly complex spinoff with some pretty unique gameplay mechanics and features. But if there’s one thing that Minecraft Legends needs to do before launch, it’s add some more customization elements.
Customization has always played a large role in Minecraft‘s core identity, even from the earliest days of the game’s original beta. One of the highlights of making a Minecraft world is that players can customize it how they see fit, choosing what structure they want to build, where they want to build it, and what materials they use. Over the years, Minecraft‘s updates have brought more and more customization to the game, whether it’s skins or new decorative blocks, and it would be great to see some of that come to Minecraft Legends.
Minecraft Legends Should Double Down on Customization
Just a few weeks ago, during the Minecraft Live event, Minecraft Legends‘ first gameplay trailer was revealed. Over the course of about 12-minutes, fans got to see what Minecraft Legends‘ general gameplay loop is going to look like. Fans saw the player-character collecting resources in the environment, creating bridges and towers, summoning an army of mobs, and engaging in battle with the evil Piglin forces.
Throughout the Minecraft Legends gameplay reveal trailer, fans could spot a few elements that seemed to be customizable. Right now, it’s 100% confirmed that players will be able to customize their Minecraft Legends character to some degree. It’s currently unknown just how extensive this character creator will be, but chances are that it’ll be relatively simple, offering just a few different face and body options. It also seems as though players will be able to customize their character’s appearance by choosing what armor types they wear, though this will likely have a pretty significant effect on gameplay, with different armors probably having different stats.
Aside from character customization, Minecraft Legends could potentially offer a small range of mob customization. This could probably be done via Minecraft Legends‘ use of hats. Each mob in the game wears a hat to protect them from the sun, as these monsters can’t survive during daytime normally, and this could pave the way for a small amount of customization, with the player being potentially able to swap out different hat styles for their mobs.
That’s about it when it comes to Minecraft Legends‘ potential customization options, at least for now. With customization being such an integral aspect of Minecraft‘s identity, it would be great to see that carry through to Minecraft Legends. There’s a whole bunch of different customization options that Minecraft Legends could implement. Players could be allowed to dye their clothing and armor to change its color, give their mobs even more apparel options, and change the appearance of their weapons and armor. Minecraft Legends could also allow players to decorate their various structures, from towers to bridges to villagers’ homes. This would be a great way to implement some more iconic Minecraft blocks, including some classic paintings, bookshelves, torches, and other decorative blocks that fans will instantly recognize. In doubling down on a variety of different customization options, Minecraft Legends will be able to capture that high level of player-freedom that vanilla Minecraft delivers, and allow players to give the game their own personal flair.
Minecraft Legends releases in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
