the greatest gifts under £50

With Christmas fast approaching, we’ve highlighted five great LEGO purchases that won’t break the bank.

LEGO obviously has appeal around the Christmas season, and nowadays there’s plenty of different options. Of course, with a number of LEGO sets increasing in price this year, it’s tempting to go for LEGO sets at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Fortunately, there’s several excellent sets to choose from – and we’ve picked out five of the best for your browsing pleasure. Regardless of your tastes, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

5 – 60324 Mobile Crane

Theme: City Price: £39.99 / $39.99 / €44.99 Pieces: 340 Available: Now

LEGO CITY 60324 Off road Crane 2

The LEGO City theme is one of the LEGO Group’s most enduring, and – while it tends to skew younger in its target audience – sets like this one can be appreciated by any LEGO fan. It comes with all the essential functionality, offering a large crane arm that can rotate 360 degrees, extend, and raise or lower its hook. Outriggers can be extended to offer greater stability, and two construction workers – one male, one female – are on hand to supervise.

It’s right at home in any LEGO street scene, and with its high interactivity – as well as a number of smart design choices – it comes highly recommended for anyone shopping on a budget.

4 – 41166 Elsa’s Wagon Adventure

Theme: Disney Price: £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 Pieces: 116 Available: Now

With its wintry scenes and earworm of a soundtrack, Frozen and Christmas have become natural partners over the last few years. 41166 Elsa’s Wagon Adventure was released in 2019 as a tie-in to Frozen II, and it’s a testament to the set’s popularity that it’s lasted on shelves this long.

This set offers a small chunk of the Enchanted Forest, complete with trees, a campfire and a reindeer-drawn wagon for Elsa to ride. Elsa herself is included in a highly-detailed outfit, with a glittery cape to finish things off. In short, the perfect LEGO Frozen set – but one we recommend picking up soon, as it’s scheduled for retirement by the year’s end.

3 – 21178 The Fox Lodge

Theme: Minecraft Price: £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 Pieces: 193 Available: Now

Minecraft is another licensing success for the LEGO Group, with a wide range of charming sets released here. The theme has taken to recreating its characters on a larger scale, whilst maintaining compatibility with its minifigures. 21178 The Fox Lodge is a particularly attractive example, offering a hideout in the shape of a sleeping fox.

The rear of the lodge is open and offers familiar comforts like a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a map of the Overworld. A player character and a Drowned Zombie are included, as is a trio of foxes to play with. It’s great as a standalone set – and its snowy landscape makes it ideal as a Christmas present as well.

2 – 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs

Theme: Creator 3-in-1 Price: £12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99 Pieces: 174 Available: Now

This dino-tastic LEGO set is – if you’ll pardon the pun – a bit long in the tooth, but still packed with appealing features. Currently available in a classic green colour scheme, the base model allows you to build a fearsome T. rex – and the remains of a less fortunate creature. It can also be rebuilt into a pterodactyl or a triceratops, letting you craft a prehistoric scene quickly and easily.

What sets this model apart from other Creator 3-in-1 sets is that there’s several different alternate builds available. The LEGO Group has provided instructions for a diplodocus, an ankylosaurus, a scorpion and even a reconnaissance plane – if you’re prepared to do a little digging online for some of them nowadays. In any case, dinosaurs remain perennially popular, and whatever you decide to build this is an excellent LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set.

1 – 60333 Bathtub Stunt Bike

Theme: City Price: £6.99 / $7.99 / €7.99 Pieces: 14 Available: Now

60333 BATHTUB STUNT BIKE contents

Want to keep your LEGO spend in the single digits? If so, we can think of nothing better than this LEGO set. Released in the LEGO City Stuntz product collection, this bike includes a built-in flywheel – which, when revved up, allows the bike to cover an impressive distance under its own power. This can be done without any secondary components, making it one of the LEGO Group’s more intuitive toys nowadays.

While a few of these standalone stunt bikes have been released over the last couple of years, this one is definitely the most appealing. Built around a bespoke bathtub element, its driver comes with a diving helmet and a rubber duck to aid him on his adventures. If you’re going to make a LEGO stuntman, you may as well have some fun with it.

All of these LEGO sets can be found in the table below, and are currently available at in all regions. However, we suggest buying them sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment – particularly as Christmas is a popular shopping period.
