Since both the RTX 3060 Ti and the RTX 3070 Ti are based on the same architecture, their fundamentals, like the process node, transistors, cache, and die size, are the same (we will discuss the Ampere architecture in the next section).
Right off the bat, it is quite clear that the RTX 3070 Ti is equipped with more power than the RTX 3060 Ti in all aspects. Take the number of CUDA cores, for example, the RTX 3070 Ti has 6,144 CUDA cores, while the RTX 3060 Ti has just 4,864.
Similarly, the RTX 3070 Ti also has a higher base and boost clock speeds of 1575 MHz and 1770 MHz, respectively. On the other hand, the RTX 3060 Ti has a base clock of 1410 MHz and a boost clock of 1665 MHz.
Not only that, but the RTX 3070 Ti also has a higher number of TMUs, ROPs, SM count, Tensor cores, and RT cores, giving the GPU an edge over the RTX 3060 Ti no matter how you look at it.
Even though both the RTX 3060 Ti and the RTX 3070 Ti have the same memory size, that is, 8 GB GDDR6X, the RTX RTX 3070 Ti has a higher memory bandwidth of 608.3 GB/s.
Well, all of these extra cores and numbers need more power to work. So, the RTX 3070 Ti also has a higher TDP of 290W. In comparison, the RTX 3060 Ti has a TDP of 200W. Consequently, the suggested PSU for the RTX 3070 Ti is 600W, and for the RTX 3060 Ti, it is 550W.
Since there is not a huge difference in the power consumption of both GPUs, they can be powered up by the 1x 12-pin power connector.
The Ampere Architecture: Everything You Need To Know
Despite the Ada Lovelace architecture’s long-awaited release, the Ampere still holds its own place as it contains the best features of its time. On top of that, as part of the NVIDIA RTX 30-series, both the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 3060 Ti are built on the same Ampere architecture. Hence, both GPUs are equipped with the same feature sets.
NVIDIA took huge leaps with its Ampere architecture as the company moved to an 8nm fabrication process, allowing it to pack more transistors and power into the chip. Let’s go over some of the Ampere architecture’s most important features.
- Third-Generation Tensor Cores: NVIDIA introduced the all-new third-gen Tensor Cores with the Ampere architecture. These cores can result in up to 20x better performance in AI-related tasks like DLSS.
- Second-Generation RT Cores: To further improve the ray tracing technology, the second-gen RT Cores result in faster delivery of tasks such as architectural design evaluations and photorealistic rendering, etc. Not only that, but these RT Cores also support concurrent Ray Tracing with either denoising or shading capabilities.
- Multi-Instance GPU (MIG): Supported on A30 and A100 GPUs, MIG lets developers divide the GPU into up to seven multiple smaller GPUs, each with its own compute cores, memory bandwidth, and cache. With MIG, administrators can assign a particular amount of GPU to each task depending on its size.
All things considered, the Ampere architecture came with very capable features that raised the bar for AMD.
Gaming Benchmarks: 1080p

So, in all the 8 games which we analyzed, the RTX 3070 Ti performed about 22% better at 1080p than the RTX 3060 Ti on average. Similarly, at 1440p, the RTX 3070 Ti performed somewhat the same as it remained ahead by ~22.9% on average than the RTX 3060 Ti.
However, one important thing that you should keep in mind is that the gaming performance varies a lot depending on the game. For instance, in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, the RTX 3070 Ti was ahead by a whopping 32.7% margin in sheer FPS figures. But then, in Hitman 3, it could only perform ~8.5% better.
Similarly, in most of the 1440p games, the RTX 3070 Ti managed to perform even better than how it did in 1080p. There are only two games, Days Gone and Minecraft ray tracing, where the overall difference in performance decreased. Other than that, it only increased, and in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at 1440p, the RTX 3070 Ti bumped the gap to 25.4% from ~16.8% at 1080p, which is quite impressive.
All things considered, the RTX 3070 Ti stayed ahead by considerable performance figures. But the RTX 3060 Ti is not too bad, either. In fact, the GPU also ran all of our games both at 1080p and 1440p with maxed-out settings without any hiccups. The only game where the GPU struggled just a bit was Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, as it could only achieve 41 average FPS. Other than that, the RTX 3060 Ti is an overall solid graphics card.
Power Consumption And Thermal Efficiency
The sheer gaming performance is not the only factor to consider when comparing two different GPUs. We also need to go over the power consumption and thermal efficiency to declare a winner of the RTX 3060 Ti vs. RTX 3070 Ti battle.
As we discussed in the detailed specifications, the RTX 3060 Ti has a TDP of 200W, whereas the RTX 3070 Ti has a 45% higher TDP of 290W. So, it was expected of the RTX 3070 Ti to consume more power as we already knew it had a higher TDP on paper. But, the real answer is what we analyzed in the gaming benchmarks.
On average, the RTX 3070 Ti consumed about 18.8% more power when running those 8 games at 1080p. Additionally, the overall difference in power consumption increased by a lot to ~30.5% as we cranked the resolution up to 1440p.
The power consumption figures varied quite a lot depending on the game and the resolution. For instance, when running Days Gone at 1440p, the RTX 3070 Ti was consuming ~51.7% more power, and in Warzone at 1080p, the GPU was actually consuming ~9.1% less power.
More power means more heat, so consequently, the RTX 3070 Ti also ran hotter than the RTX 3060 Ti. However, the difference wasn’t significantly huge that you would be concerned. In fact, in games like Warzone and Minecraft ray tracing at 1080p, both GPUs were running at the same temperature.
Nevertheless, the RTX 3070 Ti ran about 7.7% hotter on average when running the 8 games at 1080p. Similarly, the temperatures rose as we moved to 1440p because the difference in thermal efficiency increased to ~12.6% in favor of the RTX 3060 Ti.
Which GPU Offers More Value
We know that the RTX 3070 Ti is undoubtedly a superior GPU. With its up to ~32.7% better performance figures, the RTX 3060 Ti does not stand a chance. But is it actually worth it? Or would an RTX 3060 Ti provide better value for money?
Well, you can get an RTX 3060 Ti for as low as $440 and an RTX 3070 Ti for about $630, depending on the variant. So, with a difference of $190, the RTX 3060 Ti offers more value for money.
The RTX 3060 Ti ran every game we threw at it at both 1080p and 1440p with solid FPS. The GPU also performed quite well in terms of thermal and power efficiency. Not only that, but with an RTX 3070 Ti, you might also have to spend extra on the PSU as the suggested PSU for the RTX 3070 Ti is 600W while it is 550W for the RTX 3060 Ti.
While the RTX 3060 Ti seems to be the better bang for the buck, the RTX 3070 Ti is not totally a bad deal. One shouldn’t forget that the GPU performed about 22.9% better than the RTX 3060 Ti in 1440 gaming.
RTX 3060 Ti Vs. RTX 3070 Ti: Which One Is Better For You?
So, which GPU is better for you? Well, if you can afford it, then the RTX 3070 Ti is a no-brainer. The GPU packs more power, no matter how you look at it. It is a beast in its own league, and you won’t run into any performance issues with it as long as you aim to game at 1440p.
Similarly, if you’re on a budget and you think you could spend those $190 you saved on better RAM or CPU, then go with the RTX 3060 Ti. Even though the RTX 3070 Ti outperforms it in every game regardless of the resolution, the RTX 3060 Ti still managed to run them at playable FPS.
In the end, it all comes down to you. Yes, the RTX 3060 Ti is a better deal for the money, but if you want those extra frames, then the RTX 3070 Ti is not too bad either. At the moment, there is no sight of the RTX 4070, and even though that GPU will completely obliterate the RTX 3070 Ti at a similar price point, the RTX 3070 Ti remains the mid-range king.
We hope that our thorough RTX 3060 Ti vs. RTX 3070 Ti guide will assist you in picking the right GPU for your next build.
