How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft

After lots of battling and mining, players might seek a more peaceful activity to slow down. In Minecraft, it’s not difficult to find a water source, meaning there are frogs nearby. One of the ways to pass the time is by breeding these adorable creatures.

How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft

Breeding frogs might sound simple, but not everyone knows the ins and outs of this activity. You’ll need some preparation before looking for frogs. Read on for all the information.

Frog Types

You can find three types of frogs, but they all exhibit similar behavior and are only different in terms of origin. They are:

As the names suggest, these frogs come from biomes that fit their types. For example, letting a tadpole grow up in the Badlands will result in a Warm Frog. Frogs growing up in a Frozen River will become Cold Frogs.

Typically, frogs only spawn in the Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes, so you need to travel to either environment and catch some frogs. Swamp frogs are Temperate, while those from a Mangrove Swamp are considered Warm.

How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft

Players need Slimeballs to attract frogs, and there are two ways to get them. You either kill some Slimes or make Pandas sneeze them, though the first method is more reliable. Two Slimeballs are sufficient for breeding two frogs one time.

When you hold Slimeballs in your hand, all frogs within six blocks will follow you. That’s when they’re ready to reproduce. Follow these steps for breeding frogs:

  1. Gather some Slimeballs.
  2. Look for some frogs in your overworld.
  3. Feed two frogs a Slimeball each, so they enter Love Mode.
  4. Wait for one of the frogs to become pregnant.
  5. The frog will then look for a water block and lay Frogspawn.
  6. Wait for the Frogspawn to hatch into tadpoles.
  7. Wait, or feed the tadpoles more Slimeballs to make them grow faster.

It can take between two and 20 minutes for Frogspawn to hatch, but it will always happen. Uniquely, the game treats tadpoles as an entirely separate mob from frogs until they grow up.

How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft Pocket Edition

The requirements for breeding frogs in Minecraft: Pocket Edition are identical to other platforms. The only significant differences are that Pocket Edition has some unique biomes Java Edition doesn’t have, as it’s based on Bedrock. Here’s what you need to do to breed frogs in Pocket Edition:

  1. Get some Slimeballs from Slimes or Pandas.
  2. Find at least two frogs in the game.
  3. Equip the Slimeballs and tap on the frogs.
  4. Wait for the frogs to breed, and one of them will get pregnant.
  5. Let the frog lay Frogspawn.
  6. Let the Frogspawn hatch into tadpoles.
  7. You can either let the tadpoles grow naturally or feed them more Slimeballs.

Frog Behavior in Minecraft

When you first encounter frogs, they’re either in the water or on land. They hop randomly on the ground, similar to their real-life counterparts. However, they can jump eight blocks high and take much less fall damage than most mobs in Minecraft.

Frogs prefer jumping on lily pads and big dripleaves, meaning you’ll naturally find them near bodies of water. If they spot a higher block, they’ll try to jump on it, except for Honey Blocks. They won’t be able to jump on top of those.

In water, frogs will swim and travel faster, remaining at the water’s surface. They don’t usually swim downward unless players lure them with Slimeballs. As amphibians, frogs can’t drown in Minecraft.

When tamed and lured around, frogs will attack some mobs, pulling them into their mouths and despawning them. They’re handy against tiny Slimes and will drop even more Slimeballs after attacking these enemies.

Where frogs come in handy aside from attacking mobs is by creating Froglight. This substance will only drop when a frog tries to digest small magma cubes. All Froglight cubes emit light level 15, the highest possible level for its class.

The frog’s type also affects the color of the Froglight. Here’s a list that shows what you get:

  • Warm Frogs drop Pearlescent Froglight, which glows pinkish.
  • Temperate Frogs drop Ochre Froglight, which glows yellow.
  • Cold Frogs drop Verdant Froglight, which glows green.

To farm for specific colors, you can use buckets to transport tadpoles to specific biomes and let them grow up. As they become one of three types depending on where you leave them, it’s not difficult to get the Froglight colors you want.

Portable Warriors

Minecraft frogs are more than capable of fighting smaller mobs but are also the only source of Froglight blocks. Breeding them is an exciting task as you have three types to choose from. Fortunately, they don’t have any special requirements to reproduce.
